Paula: Thank you for your E-mail. I am in Chile at this moment and will not be back to the USA until next week. However, in the meantime, it would be good if you could send me a copy of your biography (curriculum vitae), and two letters of support describing your performance as a graduate student. It would also be helpful to me if you could describe your specific research interests and indicate what you would hope to achieve by coming to the USA (for example, what techniques would you be interested in learning or what scientific questions would you want to investigate?). Also, let me know how long you would be able to come for. After looking over your material, I will see what projects would be available in my laboratory. My laboratory is currently investigating various neuroendocrine mechanisms that control reproduction in nonhuman primates, and is using a wide range of experimental approaches (both in vivo and in vitro).
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Dr. Moyano,
I would be happy to discuss options with you to join my laboratory under the auspices of the Fogarty Program. The major problem may be that my work is not in the general area of reproductive biology. Rather I work on the cell and molecular biology of growth factor action, with a focus on the insulin-like growth factors. If this topic appeals to you then we should begin a dialogue. Otherwise, another lab may be a better choice.
Sincerely,
Peter Rotwein

Dear Paula-
Sorry about the delayed response. I have spent the week looking into the different options that would be available.
The Division of Reproductive Sciences is undergoing a period of transition. I am afraid that graduate program that was available to students at the primate center has been discontinued. This has left only one option for us which is to go through a graduate program at OGI. I have yet to apply to this program to become a member and start accepting graduate students. Therefore, it is unlikely that I would be able to take graduate students within the next year, and perhaps even longer. Because of this I do not think we could get you into my lab in the near future. I was wondering if there was a lab in Argentina that you could start you graduate work. If you did this then you could come to my lab as a Fogarty Fellow for a year or two to conduct research that could be used in your dissertation. Unfortunately, this is the only option I see as far as my lab is concerned.
Sorry I do not have more positive news.
Jon

Dear Paula-
I am very interested in discussing with you the possibility of joining my laboratory. From the information provided in your message, I am assuming that you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree here at OHSU. Is this correct? If so, I need to talk to Dr. Conn about including me as a member of the Fogarty grant. I will also have to check which program would be most appropriate for you to apply to. One possibility would be to go through Oregon Graduate Institute's (OGI) Department of Environmental & Biomolecular Systems graduate program. OGI is a research center that is part of OHSU. We have one student in our department that is in the middle of her Ph.D. studies as a student in that department.
In the meantime, you can go to my web page to get a better idea about the work that is going on in my laboratory:
http://onprc.ohsu.edu/discovery/dspScientistsItem.cfm?doc_id=127
I will get back to you in a couple days regarding the above issues and we can discuss the options in greater detail.
Best wishes,
Jon Hennebold

Dra. Moyano:
Thank you for your expression of interest; I have contacted the people you listed to determine if they have space in their laboratory. Once a mentor is determined, we will submit your vita to the oversight committee. Good wishes. /PMC
